Canceling a File Check-out

If you edit a checked-out file and then decide to discard your edits, you can cancel the check-out. Canceling a check-out returns the file to its original state before you edited it, and then checks it back in. Canceled check-outs are reflected in the file history.

Note: The procedure below describes how to cancel a file check-out manually. If you direct edit a file, you also may be able to cancel your check-out, depending on the check-in file user option you have selected. See Setting Document User Options for details.

  • If you select the Automatically check-in the file user option, you will not be presented with the option to cancel the check out. Instead, you must use the file versions list to restore the previous version. See Managing File Versions for instructions on restoring a file.
  • If you select either of the other two options, Document will display a window that offers you the opportunity to cancel the check out.

If you need to cancel the check out for a CaseWare file that is being editing by multiple users, use the procedure in the topic Working with CaseWare Files instead of the procedure below.
