Creating an Invoice

You can create an invoice by client, by client billing group, or, if your firm licenses CCH Axcess Workstream, by project. You must have billing permissions for a client or client billing group to create an invoice for that client or client billing group.

For information on creating or editing a custom invoice template, see Managing an Invoice Template.

Note: When you create an invoice for a project, the invoice template and invoice recipient address set in the project profile are used. If these options are not set in the project, the options selected in the client profile are used.

To create an invoice, do the following:

  1. ClosedOpen the Billing Decisions window.
    1. Open Dashboard, click Application Links on the navigation panel, and then click Bill WIP under Billing & Invoicing.
    2. Select the Clients, Client Billing Groups, or Projects tab.
    3. Locate the record you want in the grid and select Actions > Bill.

Note: You can use search or filters to help you locate the records you need. To use search, enter a client’s or client billing group's name or ID in the Search and bill box. Click the client name if you see it, or press Enter. See Using the Billing & Invoicing Filters for information about filters.

  2. Make billing decisions for the invoice. See Making Billing Decisions for more information.

Note: The billing decisions are summarized below the WIP grid in the Recap section.

  3. Select one or more WIP items, and then click Bill to open the Bill Amounts screen. See Adjusting Bill Amounts for more information.
  4. Click Apply to save your changes and return to the WIP grid.
  5. Click Edit Invoice to edit the invoice. You can determine the layout and define the content displayed in the invoice. See Editing Invoices for more information.

Note: If you need additional control over the layout and content, you can use advanced editing mode to edit the invoice in Microsoft® Word or Adobe® Acrobat®. See Editing an Invoice in Microsoft® Word or Adobe® Acrobat® for more information.

  6. Click Preview to view the invoice. If you need to make changes, click Edit Invoice or Billing Decisions to update the invoice content.

Note: To scroll through the preview, you must first click inside of the preview.

  7. Post the invoice.
  8. Print the invoice.
