Setting Your Tax Print User Options

Your print preferences are the default settings that are selected when printing the entire return and other print items. The user-level options override default settings configured for firm watermarks and the return configuration set.

To set your options for printing the entire return, do the following:

  1. Do one of the following to open User Options:
    • Select User Options on the Dashboard navigation panel
    • Click the Application button and select User Options.
  2. Click Tax > Print Options on the navigation panel.
  3. Select Enable user-level print defaults on the Entire Return tab.
  4. Select one or more Closedcopy types.

  5. Select or enter the number of print copies. You can print from one to nine copies if you are printing to a printer. Only one copy can be sent to a document imager, PDF, or TIFF file.
  6. Select a Closedprint destination.

    Destination Description
    Printer Defaults to the printer configured in Printer Setup or your last selected printer. You can select another device from the list of installed printers, if needed.
    Document Imager Available if Printer Setup contains a document imager driver configuration.
    PDF

    Prints one copy to a Portable Document Format (PDF) fixed-layout electronic file.

    TIFF Prints one copy to a Tagged Image File Format (TIFF) graphics electronic file.
    Printer and PDF Creates a PDF file containing one copy of the return and prints up to nine copies of the return to the printer configured in Printer Setup.
    Printer and TIFF Creates a TIFF file containing one copy of the return and prints up to nine copies of the return to the printer configured in Printer Setup.
  7. You can select a watermark to print in the document background, diagonally from the lower-left to the upper-right corner of the page. The watermark list is configured and can be edited for the firm using Dashboard > Application Links > Settings and defaults (under Firm) > Print.
  8. Select Mask to convert bank account, SSN, and EIN numbers to asterisks in Accountant, Client, and K-1 copy types.
  9. Note: Only the fields that are selected to mask on the Print Options return configuration set window will be converted to asterisks. If needed, verify the fields you want to mask are selected.

  10. If you are creating a PDF or TIFF file (with or without printing to a printer), enter the path where the file will be stored, or click Browse to select the file location.
  11. If you have selected more than one type of copy and are not creating separate files for each type, enter the path information in the Default single file location box.

  12. Select the appropriate options in the Additional options section.
  13. For tax years 2015 and higher, select the copy types you want to include electronic filing PDF attachments. To include PDF attachments in the government copy, you must also select the Print entire government copy option on the Print Entire Return window in the tax return. The attachments are not included when you print the reduced government copy.
  14. Tips:

    • For tax years 2015 and higher, a cover sheet is included for PDF attachments if the Suppress cover sheets option is set to N in the Return Options worksheet. However, this option affects all cover sheets. You can select to include or suppress specific cover sheets in the return print set.
    • You can also set a default print position for PDF attachment in the return print set.
  15. Click OK to save your changes.

To set your options for printing items other than the entire return, do the following: 

  1. Do one of the following to open User Options:
    • .Select User Options on the Dashboard navigation panel
    • Click the Application button and select User Options.
  2. Click Tax > Print Options on the navigation panel.
  3. Click the Other print items tab.
  4. Select Enable user-level print defaults.
  5. Select or enter the number of print copies. You can print from one to nine copies if you are printing to a printer. Only one copy can be sent to a document imager, PDF, or TIFF file.

  6. Select a Closedprint destination.

  7. If you are sending copies to a printer or document imager, you can select a print device.

  8. You can select a watermark to print in the document background, diagonally from the lower-left to the upper-right corner of the page. The watermark list is configured and can be edited for the firm using Dashboard > Application Links > Settings and defaults (under Firm) > Print.

  9. If you are creating a PDF or TIFF file (with or without printing to a printer), enter or click Browse to select the file location.
  10. Click Create bookmark PDFs to organize PDF content in Federal, State, and Cities bookmarks on the Adobe® Bookmarks pane. If you do not select to create separate PDF files, these bookmarks are located under each copy type.
  11. Note:

    • This option applies to tax years 2015 and higher.
    • Selecting this option may cause a longer time to process large returns.
    • K-1 packages, if present in the return, are organized in a separate bookmark, regardless if you select this option.
  12. Select Print only open diagnostics to include only open diagnostics in Diagnostics pages when printing Selective Pages and Preparer Reports. This option excludes diagnostics that are signed off, allowing you to focus on diagnostics that may require further input.
  13. Click OK.
